The mistake

I made the mistake.

I made the mistake of thinking I could better my life and that of my family’s. My father was a car mechanic and my mother doesn’t speak English.

I thought if I could work hard, I would be able to achieve better grades, get into a good university and get a good job.

I achieved 2 A’s and a B at A level. I went to a red brick University, Sheffield University where I gained an LL.B (2.1 – hons.) and an LL.M in Commercial Law. It was during this time I was published in the Trinity College Law Review. I then went ahead and completed the Legal Practice Course.

I have failed to secure a training contract. I have completed (at the time of writing) more than 600 job applications this year alone.

I am currently paying £360 a month paying off a professional development loan. I have yet to pay my student loan. I owe a total £40,000 in debt and I am currently unemployed.

I made the mistake believing that someone who went to one of the worst schools in Birmingham could make it into prestigious law firm.

I made the mistake.
